About
Charles is currently a research specialist and doctoral student at the Center for the Study of Higher Education at the University of Arizona. At the center, Charles' work focuses on social media in higher education as part of the 'Getting Connected' project funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and under the direction of principle investigators Regina Deil-Amen and Cecilia Rios-Aguilar. The project is particularly interested the role social media technology plays in community college student success.
However, trained as an anthropologist of higher education, Charles’ own research examines American colleges and universities as sites of cultural value and their impact on identities of race, class, gender and sexuality among college students, faculty, and staff. He remains particularly interested in the role such institutions play with regard to the experiences of African American males in classrooms, on campus, and within broader university communities. In addition to research, Charles is also currently working on two manuscripts: Black Like You: Critical Self-Reflections on Race, Schooling, and the Identity Politics of Acquiring Blackness and The Agony Continues: Students of Color at White Colleges and Universities (co-author).
