About

Samy Ayoub is a PhD candidate at the University of Arizona in the Near Eastern Studies Department. In 2006, he earned his BA degree in Islamic Studies from Al-Azhar University in Cairo. He obtained his MSc degree in 2008 in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, UK. His principal research interests are contemporary transformations of Islamic jurisprudence in Europe and North America, the craft of fatwa, the interaction between Islamic law and theology; and modern developments within political Islam. My MSc thesis analyzed the contemporary Islamic jurisprudence in Europe. So, I discussed the emergence of the European Council for Fatwa and Research (ECFR). I examined its influence, mechanism and methodology. Importantly, I discussed the theory of fiqh al-aqalliyyat (Jurisprudence for Muslim Minorities) as well as presenting an analysis for its practice through the channel of fatwa.

In my PhD, I am planning to research the theme of Maqasid al-Shari’ah (Objectives of the Revealed Text) as a core concept in the development of contemporary Islamic jurisprudence.
